Peru Unrest

In December 2022 Peru’s President Pedro Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress in an effort to hold onto power. The President was arrested and replaced by his Vice President Dina Boularte as the new President. The predominately indigenous people from the Andes region rejected the findings by the government and opposed Boularte being appointed as the new president. They believed it was a power grab by the right-leaning government and a move towards dictatorship. Thousands took to city streets around the country and travelled to the capital Lima to protest Pedro Castillo’s incarceration and to demand new elections. The widespread protests ground the country to a halt and resulted in approximately 80 people being killed by police and many more being shot, including photojournalists, as they used force to quash the unrest and silence journalists.
